The Irish Wolfhound holds a powerful place in Irish folklore, where it is often portrayed as a symbol of loyalty, strength, and nobility. In many early Irish tales, these great hounds were companions to warriors and kings, appearing in heroic cycles and legends as protectors and hunters capable of facing wolves and even mythical beasts. Their presence in folklore reflects the deep bond between people and animals in ancient Ireland, where the wolfhound represented courage, guardianship, and status. Inspired by these stories, my painting explores the mythical presence of the Irish Wolfhound by capturing its imposing size and quiet dignity. Through my use of colour and atmosphere, I aimed to evoke the sense of legend surrounding the animal, suggesting a creature that exists not only in the natural world but also in the rich imaginative landscape of Irish myth.
